“Sarina”
This crack hen won herself 1st International Barcelona hens but her heritage material is even more impressive! By crossing their own pigeons against ‘Sarina’ blood, many fanciers succeeded.

A few nest pigeons
Until a few years ago (about 10 years) they raced widow cocks. But the last few years it is mainly the nest game that has the priority. For the upcoming season there are about 60 couples ready, whereof more than half are year birds. After the season the cocks and hens just stay together. First they can breed a couple of youngsters, but afterwards, so during moulting period, the nest grids are being closed and chapels will be put on the loft. Only by half of March they will be separated to be coupled again after a short period on the 15th of April. They can only overbreed their first sitting. As from the moment they get off this nest the second ‘nest position’ starts, now they are allowed to breed the youngsters and an effort is made to create a good nesting position at basketing. The 2 brothers love to basked with a youngster of about 6 days or 12 days breeding.
The nest pigeons train at the moment they don’t have to be on their nest. This means, the cocks in the morning, the hens in the afternoon. Last year they started to train as late as possible during the summertime. This to learn to race at the evening and night. Some extra training flights are on the menu as well. As preparation for the long distance races they try to have about 1,000km in the wings of the racing team.
To motivate the nest pigeons extra, they put more seating areas in the loft. A pigeon in condition always tries to extend his territory and especially tries to defend it.
What is remarkable in this two-year system is that the first two years, so as a youngster and year bird, the pigeons (as well cocks as hens) stay on the same loft. If they survive the ‘year bird’ races, they go to the ‘old pigeon’ loft.
The breeding loft
Feeding methods and side products
As from the end of 2015 Ad and Rinus use the mixtures and the system of Matador, this on recommendation of feeding specialist Wim Muller. The base rests the same but now with Matador forage. At homecoming the pigeons get a light mixture (purification with some super diet), after that a lighted sport mixtures to come to a 100% sports mixture. This is how they adjust their feeding schedule with the Matador Premium mixtures, namely ‘rest’, ‘moulting’, ‘long distance’ and ‘start’. With at the end a small extra ‘turbo energy’ completed with hemp, success corn and peanuts (for the first time this season).
They don’t use a lot of side products, ‘a good long distance pigeons has to have it by its class’ emphasized Ad. During the resting season they always give pure water. During the racing season some products are being added, once a week glucose, twice a week “Golden Omega Oils”, this is being dried out with “Amino-Forte” from Vincent Schroeder. To recuperate as soon as possible after a race they get “Recup Forte” and they get “Levulac” on the forage, both of Schroeder.

The medical side of the story
A long distance pigeon has to grow out, this takes time and especially a specific vision. The natural resistance of a pigeon is one of the most important roles. So to overload them with several medication is not done at the brothers Hagens. But a pigeon has to be 100% pure and in top condition at the start of the season. So Ad and Rinus have a check-up before the season at vet Dr. vd Sluis from Kockengen. Mostly these check-ups are negative for coccidiosis, worms and respiratory problems. Sometimes a minor infection of trichomonas is being found, they cure against this during 7 days with a product from dr. vd Sluis. At homecoming they drink a ‘disinfectant’ from the vet (also dr. vd Sluis). During the built up to a race a cure in the water will be avoided. They drink less and this is how the fluid balance gets out of balance, which is harmful for the condition. If there might be a problem they rather use a medication in the form of a capsule.

Sonja
No, this chapter isn’t about the legendary racing hen “Sonja” who won the 1st International Perpignan but Ad’s better half. Personally I think the name ‘brothers’ isn’t justified here. When you remark how Sonja knows all the important pigeons and theirs palmaris by heart, is keeping a perfect accountancy and that she helps nurse the breeding pigeons during the busy periods, you can call her an important pillar of the success.
I would love to thank the “family Hagens” for the nice chat and hopefully we’ll meet again. Congratulations from the HERBOTS-team with the already unsurpassed list of honour!
